Icecream Screen Recorder is intended to grab static or moving images from your computer screen. The tool is extremely easy to use, so much so, that I do not think anyone can have any problems to use it. In this regard, there is even a welcome screen from which you can start any of the three possible operations: capturing video, taking screenshots or recording audio.
Like many other similar tools, Icecream Screen Recorder lets you pick the screen region you want to record video from. You can choose the full screen or draw a rectangular area. Moreover, it is also allowed to grab a specific window or set the tool to follow the mouse pointer. Yet, there is a unique feature: the possibility to change zoom even when the recording is taking place. It is excellent that the tool records any annotations and drawings you make as well. Similarly, it is great news that it allows using a webcam as a source. What is more, you can record video from the screen and your webcam simultaneously, which is very useful when making software demonstrations or tutorials. The program can export video in various common formats, like MP4, MKV, and WebM. Likewise, it comes with various recording presets, mostly intended for playback on portable devices.
As to screenshots, you have similar possibilities as those you have to record a video. The resulting images can be exported to JPG and PNG, two widely used formats. Not only that, they can be automatically copied to the clipboard, uploaded to a given URL or sent over email.
The program records audio directly from the system’s sound card or any microphone. Luckily, it now allows mixing both sources. For instance, you can play an audio background and record your voice on top.
One of the limitations in earlier versions of this product was that it did not have any video editing features. Now, I am glad that it allows at least cutting a specific segment from the original footage.
In a few words, Icecream Screen Recorder excels because of its ease of use. It pleases me that the product actually improves with every new version. Yet, it may still lack some features that you can find in other tools of the same kind. Just to mention an example, it cannot grab a scrolling region. The product is shareware, but you can use it for free with some limitations as to the length of the recording and scheduling tasks.
