Icecream Screen Recorder allows you to capture a specific area of your screen either as an image file (i.e. a screenshot) or as a video file. The program offers you several predefined options for both tasks like capturing a specific area, your full screen, the last used area or let the program demarcate the specific window or area you wish to capture for you. When it comes to capturing video, you also have the chance to capture a specific region around your mouse cursor.
The program offers a simple and straightforward user interface where you can select the capture type and area. If you select "Screenshot" and "Custom Area" respectively, you can define the area to be captured with your mouse and then modify its dimensions with total accuracy or opt for one of the predefined options (320x240, 640x480, 1024x768, fullscreen and others). You can also add custom elements such as texts, rectangles, ellipses and freehand drawings in different sizes and colors. Once you are done, you can proceed to save your capture as an image file and/or get it copied to your clipboard, however, the program also offers you a novel third option - you can get your capture automatically uploaded to their website and receive a link to it, so that you can instantly and easily share it with your friends.
The on-screen video capture function works in a very similar way than screenshot capture except that you can manually start and stop the recording, program a specific time in minutes for it to stop automatically, and zoom in or out. Besides, you can enable or disable the audio capture for your video, either from the internal source (your sound card), from the external one (your microphone) or both. Additionally, the program can capture your webcam activity and include it on your video. Once your recording is ready, you can save it as a video file on your PC. This function is particularly useful to create tutorials and webinars.
Icecream Screen Recorder keeps track of your captures and shows them as a list every time you run the program. You can use this list to remove any capture, copy it to your clipboard, open the location of its file on Windows Explorer and, in the case of videos, upload it to YouTube. On the "Settings" panel of the program you can set the default path for storing your captures and default image and video formats for them. Unfortunately, the program only supports JPG and PNG formats for screenshots and MP4, MKV and WebM for videos. You can also set the video capture quality and define hotkeys for all the actions supported by the program, so that you don't even need to resource to your mouse to use it.
As you can see, Icecream Screen Recorder is a powerful tool that will surely fulfill the screen capture needs of most PC users. Although you can use it for free, there are some limitations until you upgrade to the paid version of the program. For example, you can record on-screen videos up to 5 minutes long, and you are not allowed to schedule automatic screen captures tasks.
