Capturing video, either via your webcam or by recording any activity taking place on your screen, couldn’t be simpler. All you have to do is select the area you wish to record – a custom area, the entire screen, the last area used for your recordings, whatever activity takes place around your mouse, or you can leave the program to detect the active area automatically. The next step is to choose any of the quality profiles provided. The program offers you a wide variety of resolutions (from 192x144 to 1280x720) for both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios. These dimensions can be easily changed later simply by dragging with your mouse the corners of the selected area so that it fits the part of the screen you wish to capture. Except for the output profile selection, you’re also required to go through these settings first when taking a screenshot of your desktop.

The recording may include an audio stream or not, and the program allows you to add your own comments to it via an external microphone (for instance, when recording a tutorial). During the recording, you can add your own drawings, color boxes, and text to the image on the screen, and even zoom in and out to highlight a specific area or element. The recordings can be set to stop automatically after a certain amount of time, if required. Videos and screenshots will be saved in the folder of your choice, and the program will keep a history of all the tasks performed for future reference.

Except for the fact that this free version of the program limits the length of the video recordings to 10 minutes, Icecream Screen Recorder is an excellent free screen capture video tool with all the features present in most paid alternatives.
